Adding yet another learning environment to the ‘College Beyond Walls’, Coastline College of Orange County, California is holding a grand opening of their new cadaver lab from the John Stauffer Charitable Trust grant. The new John Stauffer Human Anatomy Suite will provide experiential learning opportunities and have a tremendously positive impact on the education experiences of the College's Biological Sciences and Allied Health students.

Guests at the Grand Opening on Oct. 20, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., will be able to get a tour at the ribbon cutting of the college’s newest facility and explore the lab space.

Attendees will include faculty, staff, and students, as well as special guests Timothy Gosney, William Kruse, and Michael Whalen-Trustees from the John Stauffer Charitable Trust, Dr. Mark Linksey, Professor of Neurological Surgery at the UCI School of Medicine, and Darla Colohan from African Mission Services.

There will be an opening ceremony on the 2nd floor patio on Coastline’s Newport Beach campus followed by the ribbon cutting and tour of the lab.

Coastline College President Dr. Vince Rodriguez said, “We are so pleased to be adding even more incredible authentic hands-on activities to the student experience. This lab will be an outstanding resource for students as they engage in the all-important study of the human anatomy as part of their health sciences education.”

The John Stauffer Human Anatomy Suite will be available to students in addition to the College’s time-tested and traditional model of learning about the body through the use of human cadavers, a cornerstone of the Coastline’s health sciences education.

“At Coastline College, we have always embraced time-honored methods of science instruction like human cadaver dissection, while welcoming new technologies that give our students the academic diversity and a competitive advantage needed to succeed in today’s healthcare market,” said Dr. Tom Neal, Dean of the Newport Beach campus.

The professors behind the lab are known as mentors and friends to many. Graduated students of the Coastline Biological Science and Allied Health program are now practicing medical doctors, dentists, physician assistants, nurses, and occupational and physical therapists. In addition to their practices, some graduates have returned as part-time instructors.

“We are so blessed to have had the support of the John Stauffer Charitable Trust, the administration, and our maintenance and operations department in the development of this unique experience in human anatomy for our students,” said Dr. Deborah Henry, Professor of Anatomy and Physiology at Coastline College.

Coastline College is deeply committed to academic excellence and student success and is part of the Coast Community College District (CCCD) in Orange County. The College serves a diverse population of students with onsite classes at three campuses located in Garden Grove, Westminster, and Newport Beach. The College's Biological Sciences and Allied Health department is located at each of these campuses. Three of the six science labs are located at the Newport Beach campus. Coastline College offers a variety of courses leading to the attainment of certificates and degrees in life sciences, health, and medical-related fields.

Most of the Biological Sciences and Allied Health students come to Coastline to complete their prerequisites for healthcare careers in nursing, pharmacy, physical and occupational therapy, physician assistant programs, and medical and dental schools. As a requirement for completion, students need human anatomy and physiology courses. Human cadavers in the lab create an active learning environment that allows students to have a hands-on experience that will provide enhanced instruction in human anatomy for the Health Science students. Some students as part of their application process for transfer to degree programs require access to a human cadaver.
