First Direct Assessment CBE Degree in California Community College System Now Officially Live
On July 14, 2025, Coastline College officially launched Pace+, the first direct assessment Competency-Based Education (CBE) program in the California Community College system—marking a transformative milestone in higher education. Designed to expand access, flexibility, and equity, Pace+ empowers students to earn college credit by demonstrating mastery of skills rather than adhering to traditional semester timelines.
Unlike traditional models based on classroom hours and academic calendars, Pace+ measures learning by what students know and can do, not by how long they sit in class. Students advance by mastering real-world competencies, allowing them to move faster, study flexibly, and save money.
“Pace+ reflects the future of learning—personalized, flexible, and focused on outcomes,” said Dr. Vince Rodriguez, President of Coastline College. “We’re proud to be the first college in the state to offer a direct assessment degree, and we remain committed to serving the evolving needs of today’s learners.”
Held at the Coastline Student Services Center, the launch celebration drew leaders from across the Coast Community College District, including Chancellor Dr. Whitney Yamamura, Board President Dr. Elizabeth Parker, and elected officials representing Orange County and the state.
Guests enjoyed food and refreshments, branded merchandise, a campus scavenger hunt, and received a commemorative challenge coin to mark the occasion. A ceremonial ribbon-cutting by faculty lead Dr. Erin Thomas officially opened the new program.
Proclamations from the offices of Congressman Derek Tran, Senator Tony Strickland, and Assemblymember Tri Ta honored Coastline’s leadership and innovation in public higher education. College leadership also recognized the exceptional contributions of faculty who developed the program.
Pace+ currently offers an Associate of Science in Management, with more programs planned. With twelve start dates throughout the year, it is tailored for working adults, military-connected learners, and those seeking flexible, personalized pathways to a degree. The program represents Coastline’s third major innovation milestone, further solidifying its leadership in transforming access to higher education.
“This is more than a program launch—it’s a reimagining of what college can be,” said Dr. Erin Thomas. “Our students are ready for a model that respects their time, experience, and potential.”
