Industry: Cybersecurity

Job: Information Security Analyst

It's been all over the news and will most likely continue to be - cybersecurity needs personnel. Let's take a moment to break down exactly what cybersecurity is. According to CISA, which is the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, “Cybersecurity is the art of protecting networks, devices, and data from unauthorized access or criminal use and the practice of ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information.” This definition packs a punch and gives us solid idea as to what the career entails. Every time you use your iPhone or laptop your information is at risk of being stolen.

Cybersecurity experts and software are there to safeguard your information. Information security analysts are the gatekeepers or security guards of information systems. It has been reported by the bureau of labor statistics that Cybersecurity analysts have a median salary of $103,590. That's a great median salary that should entice you to explore the field. You might be wondering how you can get involved with Cybersecurity? Not sure if it will be right for you? Then you can always baby step in with a class and start out with a certificate, then get another and another, and eventually those certificates can become a degree. You can work in the field while finishing school! And you can do it at your own pace on YOUR TERMS. Are you very much into software and computers? Then, I would highly suggest checking out Cybersecurity.

Imagine you can coordinate, manage, and deliver commercial goods from thousands of miles away. The supplies will come by ship, trucking companies, or air cargo. These goods and materials will be used for a wide variety of products or services. The Supply Chain industry has had an explosion of job openings in the past couple of years and will continue to do so. Their skills lie in making these behind-the-the scenes undertakings appear effortless, so companies and governments can continue running smoothly. According to the Association for Supply Chain Management, the average salary comes in at $86,000. For entry level positions into the industry the salary is about $60,000. The Supply Chain industry also recently had the wage gap between men and women close! Definitely a big accomplishment considering wage gap issues in the United States continue to persist. Being a part of the supply chain is a big deal - you could be helping to transport essential goods for the country. Worried that this job may not be “green” enough for you? Logisticians can also coordinate responses to major natural disasters, such as hurricanes or earthquakes, or plan cleanups of environmental disasters like oil spills. So yes, you can still be part of keeping planet green, even in a career like this!

Industry: Construction

Job: Construction Manager

Have you ever wanted to be a part of the team that builds skyscrapers? How about being involved with the building of bridges and dams? Construction managers obtain work permits, hire contractors, troubleshoot emergencies, schedule walkthroughs and keep clients informed on work timetables and progress. Construction management is ideal for someone who has a general interest in building and design. You can help lead, manage, and oversee a part of the construction management industry. Construction Management professionals known as superintendents, construction managers, and project managers are at the forefront of the construction industry. A superintendent is responsible for the day to day operations of the jobsite and ensures the project is completed within a given schedule. Project managers are more administrative with tasks such as budgeting, contract review, and procurement of materials. Make no mistake, both roles are vital on a construction site. If you are more interested in working with your hands and doing the physical work in construction - good news! Being a construction tradesmen or tradeswoman will allow you to do that. You can get into so many different trades in construction such as: electrical, plumbing, painting, carpentry. Just imagine, every single building or home has had construction tradesmen work on it at some point. In my opinion a great thing about construction is that the work can be seen - it is a part of physical reality! Let’s not forget, construction management or tradesmen can choose to specialize in commercial, industrial, or residential construction. At this point, you might be wondering what is required for working in construction management? It is recommended that people interested in construction get a bachelor's degree, but you can start out with certificates in things like building code technology. If you are interested in the trades of construction it is often ideal to get an apprenticeship through a union. If you want to go out and build things that will be around forever - construction is for you!

Industry: Data

Job: Data Analytics

This career field is vastly different from the others that I have listed but prejudge the field of Data Analytics. According to Investopedia, Data Analytics is the science of analyzing raw data to make conclusions about that information. By digging into the data, analysts can discover trends and help to make conclusions about the data that has been gathered. Businesses can then take that information to help themselves better their processes and reduce costs. Take a moment to think about this - data is everywhere - and is a never-ending source of information for companies of all sizes! In fact, you probably have already been looking at your own data on social media. Every time you get likes on an Instagram post you are collecting your own data. I always like looking at which of my IG posts got the most likes. Thankfully Instagram makes it very easy for users to understand their own data with easy-to-read graphs and percentages. Sometimes I wonder why my dog gets more likes than my cat? Maybe humans really are more dog lovers than cat lovers! All kidding aside, this is a basic example of collecting data and trying to figure out the meaning behind it. While data science is still a new career field, employers are increasingly recognizing the value of professionals with this expertise. Today, you’ll find data scientists working at a range of organizations, including tech startups, government agencies, large companies and research institutions.
