Coastline College Showcases Leadership at CBE Exchange 2025 in Arizona

Coastline College proudly attended and participated in CBE Exchange 2025 in Arizona—an energizing three-day national conference that brought together colleges, universities, workforce partners, and policymakers to advance competency-based education (CBE). This year’s conference embraced a festive hoedown theme, complete with Western-inspired décor and activities that added a sense of fun, camaraderie, and community to the event’s forward-looking discussions.

Coastline College was recognized as a national leader among the consortium of colleges and universities and as the first California Community College to launch a direct assessment competency-based education program, offering an Associate of Science in Management built entirely around demonstrated mastery rather than seat time. Coastline’s pioneering work drew significant attention at the conference, and leaders from the College were invited on stage to answer questions, share lessons learned, and discuss the opportunities and responsibilities of being an early adopter of direct assessment in the state.

Representing Coastline were President Dr. Ms. Rodriguez, Vice President Dr. Osegueda, Dean Nate Harrison, Professor Erin Thomas, Director Sue Stanley, Professor Dr. Margaret Moodian and Consultant Dr. Shelly Blair, who each contributed to discussions on policy, implementation, student support, and the future of direct assessment within the California Community Colleges system. Their participation reinforced Coastline’s longstanding commitment to educational innovation, equity-centered design, and creating pathways that align with the needs of today’s learners and tomorrow’s workforce.
