February 10, 2026, the Westminster Le Jao Coastline College Campus was transformed into a vibrant Lunar New Year celebration, marking the beginning of Tết in unforgettable fashion. Beneath traditional red and gold paper lanterns, more than 150 students, staff, and community members gathered, filling the campus with energy and excitement. Many attendees wore beautiful traditional Vietnamese attire, adding elegance, color, and cultural pride to the event. Vivid red displays and beautifully prepared foods showcased the rich culinary traditions of communities that observe the Lunar New Year. This year welcomes the Year of the Horse, a symbol of strength, energy, resilience, and forward momentum—qualities reflected throughout the event.

We were honored to be joined by Chancellor Yamamura and Trustees Prinsky, Moreno, Hornbuckle, and Nguyen—with Trustee Nguyen never missing an opportunity to jump on the drums and fully embrace the festive spirit. New to this year’s celebration was Vietnamese calligraphy, or Thư pháp (“the law of writing”), a traditional art form that blends ink brush techniques with emotional expression and meaning.

The rhythmic pounding of drums introduced a lively lion dance that captivated the crowd. Many participants took part in the tradition of feeding the lions red envelopes in hopes of attracting good luck, prosperity, and success in the year ahead.

The event was also an opportunity for Coastline to stand with its Asian American community and to showcase its work in fostering inclusivity. College departments and student organizations were out in full force. Coastline's Lotus Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Student Achievement Program oversaw the event's programming, while departments like Financial Aid and EOPS were on hand to connect with students. Student groups brought enthusiasm and visibility, including the Esports Club, the Pre-Med Club, and the Associated Student Government. With the Lunar New Year officially beginning on February 17, the afternoon set a powerful tone for the year ahead.
